    THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR (1861-1865) BEGAN WHEN SHOTS WERE FIRED BY CONFEDERATE FORCES ON
    THE FEDERAL TROOPS DEFENDING FORT SUMTER, SOUTH CAROLINA, ON APRIL 12TH, 1861.
    THE CIVIL WAR CENTENNIAL COMMISSION WAS CREATED BY CONGRESS TO HELP WITH A FIVE-YEAR
    OBSERVANCE OF THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CIVIL WAR.
    THIS HIGH RELIEF MEDALLIC ISSUE BEARS THE IMAGES OF THE TWO GREAT CIVIL WAR GENERALS, GRANT AND LEE,
    RESPECTIVELY REPRESENTING THE UNION AND CONFEDERACY. LEE SURRENDERED HIS ARMY OF
    NORTHERN VIRGINIA TO GRANT AFTER THE BATTLE OF APPOMATTOX COURTHOUSE APRIL 9,
    1865. THE FORMAL CEREMONY OF SURRENDER THAT ENDED THE WAR TOOK PLACE A FEW
    DAYS LATER, ON APRIL 12, THE SAME DAY THAT SHOTS HAD BEEN FIRED ON FORT SUMTER 5 LONG
    YEARS BEFORE.
    THE YEAR 2011 MARKS THE SESQUECENTENNIAL
    OF THE WAR BETWEEN THE STATES.
