    Description

    There are two black glass bottles, one large (10¼ “) and one smaller (8”), listed separately; this is the large one.
    Each bottle has an applied seal on the front with the initials WA dating to around 1780 or thereabouts.
    I’m not familiar with bottle details, but the larger bottle appears to have a rough, unpolished kickup, while the smaller bottle’s appears to be polished.
    Over the years, I have found a couple of examples of the larger bottle, but have never seen the smaller size.
    There is some roughness on the inside of the rim of this larger bottle (see photo), but both bottles are in excellent condition with no chips or flaws that I can find.

    History of the bottles:
    My late husband was a bottle collector and digger while we were in England for a year in the mid 1970s.
    My recollection, vague as it is, is that he and some fellow collectors were told of a stash of seal bottles found in a priest’s hole in a manor house in Lancashire.
    Unfortunately, he didn’t record the information or where the house was, and my memory of it is dim.
    They may have come from the house of William Atherton (son of William Atherton of Preston) a wealthy slave holder and trader who bought a house in Prescot after living in Jamaica and the U.S.
    I have no idea if this is actually true; it could be completely inaccurate.
    Perhaps someone out there will know the true story.
