FINE QUALITY 'SPACED-OUT' SALTGLAZED BELLARMINE JUG, COLOGNE / SIEGBURG, 1580

Description

A fine and collectable saltglazed small stoneware Bellarmine jug with a bulbous body and nice ear-shaped handle; the neck with an applied 'spaced-out' mask; glazed all over with a rich, dark-brown glaze; Cologne or Siegburg, circa 1580.
This superb Bellarmine jug is smaller than average at just 5 7/8 inches tall. The base diameter is 2 3/8 inches. It has a lovely compact form. There is a cordon around the rim for securing a cork or leather bung. The jug has a detailed mask of 'spaced-out' type with a short curly beard.
This Bellarmine is restored. This was done before we bought it so we can't be precise about the extent except to say that the restoration is superbly done and the appearance is now perfect (see all 12 of the accompanying photos).
This is a
rare
early Bellarmine which represents the opportunity to begin a collection of early stoneware with a magnificent
example at a very reasonable price: a perfect example would cost at least double the price of this one.
