    Description

This listing is for the hardcover book "An Illustrated History of English Plate - Ecclesiastical and Secular Volume 1" by Charles James Jackson. There are 466 pages in this book which measures 8 1/4" x 11 1/4". This book covers the history of English silver going back 3,000 years including Native work, Roman, Gothic, Anglo-Saxon, Norman, Middle Ages, Renaissance, Stuart, Commonwealth, Ecclesiastical, Rococo, and much more.
From the dust jacket: This is the definitive history of the art of the silversmith and the goldsmith in the British Isles from the earliest times to the beginning of the 20th century. It is indispensable for anyone interested in antique English plate. The author closely considers the development of styles in objects wrought from silver and gold for ecclesiastical, ceremonial, domestic, & decorative purposes. The first part of the text traces the forms and styles as they developed chronologically, beginning with the ancient crescent-shaped gold collars of Irish origin and proceeding through the Roman and Anglo-Saxon periods to the Romanesque and Gothic work of the Middle Ages. A special chapter on the work of Irish goldsmiths between 900 and 1200 AD includes a detailed description of the Ardagh chalice. The moldings and enrichment characteristic of Renaissance plate and the resulting alternation of extravagant ornamentation and relatively plain styles throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries are described and illustrated.
This is a 1969 Dover Reprint of the 1911 original book. Condition of the book is excellent, but the dust jacket has a small tear and some fading to the edge of the dust jacket. I have taken several photographs so please see them for more detail.
